An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Capital Accountant to join a busy and forward-thinking NHS finance team. This is a key role within the organisation, supporting the delivery of a substantial capital programme while ensuring the highest standards of financial control, reporting and compliance.

Working closely with senior finance colleagues, operational managers and capital project teams, you will take ownership of the Trust's capital accounting processes and provide expert financial support across a diverse portfolio of capital investment projects.

Key Responsibilities

Fixed Asset Register Management

  • Maintain the Trust's Fixed Asset Register, ensuring accuracy, completeness and compliance.
  • Process capital additions, disposals, transfers and revaluations.
  • Ensure assets are appropriately classified and accounted for in line with relevant accounting standards.

Capital Reporting & Month-End

  • Lead monthly capital accounting and reporting activities.
  • Produce capital expenditure reports, forecasts and variance analysis.
  • Support budget holders and project managers with financial information and advice relating to capital schemes.

Year-End Capital Accounting

  • Deliver year-end capital accounting requirements and statutory disclosures.
  • Prepare working papers and supporting analysis for annual accounts.
  • Support internal and external audit processes and respond to audit queries.

IFRS Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with IFRS and NHS financial reporting requirements.
  • Provide technical accounting advice on capital expenditure, asset accounting and related transactions.

Controls, Assurance & Reconciliation

  • Maintain strong financial controls across capital accounting processes.
  • Complete balance sheet reconciliations and asset-related control accounts.
  • Support assurance activities and continuous improvement initiatives.

Supporting Capital Programmes

  • Provide financial support to capital projects from approval through to completion.
  • Monitor capital expenditure against approved plans and funding allocations.
  • Work collaboratively with project teams to support the successful delivery of capital investments.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Experience of capital accounting, fixed asset management and financial reporting.
  • Strong reconciliation, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of IFRS and accounting standards relating to fixed assets and capital expenditure.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with both finance and non-finance stakeholders.
  • Experience working within a large, complex organisation, ideally within the public sector or NHS.

Qualifications

  • CCAB/CIMA qualified accountant desirable.
  • However, candidates who are part-qualified or qualified by experience with relevant capital accounting expertise will also be considered.
